Birdseed Balls

2 C Peanut Butter (creamy or chunky)
1 C Lard
2 C Oats
1 C Cornmeal
3 C Bird seeds
2-3 C Dried fruits (raisins, apples, etc.), crushed Cheerios, and/or whatever else you have laying around the pantry that you think birds might like

Melt the peanut butter and lard together. Mix in the dry ingredients well. If the mixture is too soft, just add in some bird seeds or oats or cornmeal. Place some foil or wax paper on a cookie sheet. Shape the mixture into balls (about 2-3 inches wide), and place on the cookie sheet. Put the cookie sheet in the freezer for about 30 - 60 min. This will make it easier to handle later.
Have some yarn or twine ready, as well as some old CLEAN pantyhose (the netting that some citrus fruit comes in workers as well). Take the balls out of the freezer, and put one into the pantyhose leg (cut the legs off the hose first). Stretch the hose as tight as you can over the ball (that will make it easier for the birds to get to the food). Tie the end(s) off with the yarn/twine, and hang on a tree. Do this for all the balls.
You can keep the extra balls in a bag in the freezer.
